後來的科學家更進一步發現，失活的染色體上仍有30%的基因保有活性，在女性碰到困難，如生病、老化、挨餓，細胞會去選擇當下對個體最有利的基因，助女性生存。因此，如飽受相同疾病所苦，女性的存活率會比男性更高。這樣的雌雄差異大大改變學界看待兩性臨床表現。僅使用雄性白老鼠的藥物開發實驗室，必然要改變現狀，將女性變數納入數據。
