Overview
Why do we give up on the things that we used to feel so passionate about?
After years of art training and comparing comparison with others, Hank put down his pencils and gave up on his greatest passion. He didn’t draw anything for 2 years. Then one day, while looking through his old sketchbook, he decided to give drawing another chance.
But instead of picking up where he left off, he bought the most ordinary notebook and a ballpoint pen, committing to drawing just one page each day. It didn’t matter what he drew, if it was completed, or how it looked, he continued day after day. 18 days later, his 50-page notebook was filled with “ugly” doodles that brought him pure joy.
Then, he began to contemplate why he ever gave up…
It dawned on him why he was driven away 2 years ago: he had become obsessed with improving his technique that all sense of enjoyment was lost. And he realized the real barrier to creativity wasn't a lack of talent—it's the invisible frameworks and critique of himself he built around himself. And he found many others like himself.
In this book, Hank shares pieces of insights from his artistic journey, discovering that when you let go of your own limiting mindset, not only do your skills naturally flourish you also find joy in what you do. Each insight comes with a “daily drawing practices” that sets you free from judgment, technique and paralyzing pursuit of perfection.
