Summary
Ahh, the trees.
On the other side of the forest, there is an old loblolly pine.
Once, it was the tallest tree in the forest, a hundred feed up it
reached, right up to the clouds, right beneath the stars. Such a
tree. Now broken in half, it stands beside the creek called the
Little Sorrowful.
Trees are the keepers of stories. If you could understand the
languages of oak and elm and tallow, they might tell you about
another storm, an earlier one, twenty-five years ago to be exact, a
storm that barreled across the sky, filing up the streams and
bayous, how it dipped and charged, rushed through the boughs. Its
black clouds were enormous, thick and heavy with the water it had
scooped up from the Gulf of Mexico due south of here, swirling its
way north, where it sucked up more moisture from the Sabine River to
the east, the river that divides Texas and Louisiana.
§@ªÌ About the Author
Kathi Appelt at the age of seven, stumbled and fell into an
alligator pit in San Antonio, Texas, a place where there should be
no alligators or alligator pits. Fortunately she was a lot bigger
than the alligator, who was more scared of her than she was of it!
She
is a member of the faculty at Vermont College¡¦s Master of Fine Arts
program and occasionally teaches creative writing at Texas A&M
University. She has two grown children, and lives in Texas with her
husband and four cats. This is her debut novel.

Summary
For homeland security
reasons, I am leaving out certain important details in this
notebook. I would not want my plans to fall into the wrong hands.
But for those of you reading these notes hoping to build your own
spaceship, I will give you one piece of free advice: always use duct
tape, the silver kind. Never use Scotch tape or even masking tape.
That stuff is so flimsy your ship will fall apart before you reach
the Van Allen belts.
Of
course I did not make everything all at once. I have been planning
and working on the main components of my spaceship for weeks. As
soon as I finished something, I put it on the top shelf of my
closet, where Jonathan can not reach.

Summary
Critical
illness is a fact of life. Even those of us who enjoy decades of good health
are touched by it eventually, either in our own lives or in those of our
loved ones. And when this happens, we grapple with serious and often
confusing choices about how best to live with our afflictions.
A Life
Worth Living is a book for people facing these difficult decisions. Robert
Martensen, a physician, historian, and ethicist, draws on decades of
experience with patients and friends to explore the life cycle of serious
illness, from diagnosis to end of life. He connects personal stories with
reflections upon mortality, human agency, and the value of ¡§cutting-edge¡¨
technology in caring for the critically ill. Timely questions emerge: To
what extent should efforts to extend human life be made? What is the value
of nontraditional medical treatment? How has the American health-care system
affected treatment of the critically ill? And finally, what are our doctors¡¦
responsibilities to us as patients, and where do those responsibilities end?
Using poignant case studies, Martensen demonstrates how we and our loved
ones can maintain dignity and resilience in the face of life¡¦s most daunting
circumstances.

Summary
DAS BUCH DER
VERBRANNTEN BÜCHER has taken place 75 years ago. The book contains short
biographies and work histories of those authors whose names were on the
first "Black list" - 92 German authors and 35 foreign authors. Some of those
names are known to us - Lion Feuchtwanger, Alfred Kerr, Anna Seghers, Klaus
Mann, Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth. For some of the authors however, the
gruesome Nazi´s intention worked and until today their names and works are
hardly familiar to us.
Volker
Weidermann now worked on the task to portray all of those 127 authors and
their works (or some of them) and spared no effort to get hold of the
author´s works. Volker Weidermann says in his foreword: "This is the goal of
this book: To wrest those forgotten authors and works from oblivion and to
make them accessible again to the public. To turn the book burner´s victory
into defeat, to let the books shine in a new light and to write the dramatic
history of many author´s lives anew. The book does not try to give a
scientific work analysis but describes reading impressions and tries to
bring close the burnt works as vividly as possible. And it recounts dramatic
life stories."
§@ªÌ
About
the Author
Volker Weidermann was born in 1969 in Darmstadt, Germany. He
studied politics and German language and literature in Heidelberg
and Berlin. He is the literary editor and head of Feuilleton
section of the Frankfurt Allgemine Sonntaszeitung. His previous book
LICHTJAHRE, published in 2006 was the short history of German
literature from 1945 until today - an often subjective and
always passionate account. It hit a nerve in Germany - many readers
appreciated his view of the books - and the sales have sold 25.000
copies in Germany.
