Summary

In the late afternoon on the second Friday in September, Amedeo Kaplan stepped down from the school bus into a cloud of winged insects. He waved his hand in front of his face only to find that the flies silently landed on the back of his hand and stayed there. They didn¡¦t budge, and they didn¡¦t bite. They were as lazy as the afternoon. Amedeo looked closely. They were not lazy. They were preoccupied. They were coupling, mating on the wing, and when they landed, they stayed connected, end to end. They were shameless. He waved his hands and shook his arms, but nothing could interrupt them.

Summary

That day in Mr. Price¡¦s office in New York, Elizabeth thought now, had been the turning point of her whole life. If it had not been for that day last spring, none of the summer¡Xworking in the theatre, getting to know Kurt, beginning a completely new life¡Xwould have been possible.

Even then she had been aware of it. Sitting in the anteroom of Mr. Price¡¦s office, she had thought, how strange to know that the whole course of my life can be changed today in this dingy office.

But it was true. It was so frighteningly true that her hands had felt cold with fear and her heart had beat so fast that for a moment she was afraid that she might faint in the hot stuffiness of the little room. Although it was an unseasonably hot April day, steam hissed in the radiator, and there was no window in the anteroom. Even the office door to the main hallway was closed.

Summary

Helen lives in Melbourne, and her friend Nicola flies down from Sydney for a three-week visit. She will sleep in Helen¡¦s house, in her lovingly prepared spare room. This is no ordinary visit. Nicola has advanced cancer and is seeking alternative treatment from a clinic in Helen¡¦s city. From the moment Nicola steps off the plane, gaunt, staggering like a crone, her voice hoarse but still with something grand about her, Helen becomes her nurse, her protector, her guardian angel and her stony judge.

The Spare Room
tells a story of compassion and anger, of sleepless nights and helpless laughter as the two women negotiate their way through Nicola¡¦s bizarre treatments. Helen is sceptical and Nicola stubbornly serene but they are locked in a crazy dance and neither can let go.

Summary

In the summer of 2006, the Chinese government fulfilled a fifty-year plan to build a railway into Tibet. Since Mao Zedong first envisioned it, the line had grown into an imperative, a critical component of China¡¦s breakneck expansion and the final maneuver in strengthening China¡¦s grip over this remote and often mystical frontier, which promised rich resources and geographic supremacy over South Asia.

¡@

Through the lives of the Chinese and Tibetans swept up in the project, Fortune magazine writer Abrahm Lustgarten explores the ¡§Wild West¡¨ atmosphere of the Chinese economy today. He follows innovative Chinese engineer Zhang Luxin as he makes the train¡¦s route over the treacherous mountains and permafrost possible (for now), and the tenacious Tibetan shopkeeper Rinzen, who struggles to hold on to his business in a boomtown that increasingly favors the Han Chinese. As the railway¡Xthe highest and steepest in the world¡Xextends to Lhasa, and China¡¦s ¡§Go West¡¨ campaign delivers waves of rural poor eager to make their fortunes, their lives and communities fundamentally change, sometimes for good, sometimes not.

Lustgarten¡¦s book is a timely, provocative, and absorbing first-hand account of the Chinese boom and the promise and costs of rapid development on the country¡¦s people.

Summary

Simply Irresistible:

It's said if you want to succeed, watch successful people and do what they do. Simply Irresistible is a humorous manual of case studies that show how the greatest sirens of history did what they did and got what they wanted, nearly all the time. Our role models--many of whom are still weaving their charms today-- include Eva Peron, Greta Garbo, Coco Chanel, Nigella Lawson, Angelina Jolie, Edith Piaf, Lucretia Borgia, Anne Boleyn, Mata Hari, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Simply Irresistible gives practical, sexy, and sometimes downright outrageous advice on modern seduction. It exalts the siren archetypes of the Companion, Competitor, Goddess, Mother, and Sex Kitten. The cheeky histories of the iconic real-life women are paired with a fun array of quizzes, quotes, photos, tongue-in-cheek captions, and personal stories of triumph and tragedy. (Mata Hari and Anne Boleyn were, after all, both executed.) The wisdom of these famous sirens is fleshed out with the contributions of everyday, lesser known charismatic women. The conclusion? All women have an inner siren--the ability to bring men to their knees--just waiting to come out. Now they'll know how.

If I'd Known Then:

Ellyn Spragins, editor of the New York Times best-selling book, What I Know Now: Letters to My Younger Self, uses the same winning formula, this time gathering the wisdom of a younger generation¡¦s extraordinary women who reflect on life, transitions, and what they wish they had known in their youth. The letters written by women in their 20s and 30s are filled with advice and insight they wish they had had when they were younger. They cover topics such as first love, heartbreak, body image, conflict with parents, the drive/pressure for perfection, friendship, experience with drugs, discovery of passion for music, art, sexual expression, competition and much more. As Spragins did in her first book whose contributors included the likes of Madeleine Albright and Queen Noor, she taps such people as Chelsea Clinton and actress Anne Hathaway, athletes Mary Osborne and Venus Williams, filmmaker Sofia Coppola and designer Stella McCartney
