When you first walk int o a room in a house, it has a way of telling you it knows you're there. It ain't nothing particular noticeable, just the air inside of it changes like it's saying, “I'm watching you.” But I'd got int o this stable so quiet and sneakish that nothing knowed I'd cracked open the door, help my breath, and taken a step inside.

Then I heard a humming sound so nearby that my blamed legs and breathing froze up all over again. Whatever was making that sound was so close that even my eyeballs locked where they were. Then, slow as a maple sap on a cold day, I slid my eyes off to the left, where the sound was coming from. Someone had leaned some dark bundles or sacks up ‘gainst the side of the stable. There were five of ‘em. The noise commenced again, sounding like someone fishing ‘round trying to figure which song they were ‘bout to hum.

It was one of them bundles! And it had four arms! Two of ‘em were tiny and still, and two of ‘em were big and moving. I couldn't believe I'd come all the way to the United States of America to see my first ghosts!

Summary

In Wilson 's pleasantly creepy debut novel, Owen Patterson, a Southern California software manual writer, believes that the "soil" of his marriage has been "poisoned" by the aftereffects of his brother-in-law's murder. The killer, Henry Joseph Raven, murdered CJ while Owen and Patty were on their honeymoon. Raven received a "twenty-odd-year" sentence, but Patty and her parents, a year later, are still in mourning. Owen, meanwhile, comes up with a convoluted plan for revenge: he creates alter ego Lily Hazelton, a lovelorn teacher's aide whose identity is a morass of tortured bits from Owen's past—chiefly his infatuation with now-dead cousin (and first love and sexual partner) Eileen—and writes to Raven in prison. Though the plan is never quite concrete, Owen aims to use Lily to seduce Raven through an exchange of letters, and then deny him the object of his desire, thus destroying Raven as CJ was destroyed. But as Owen gets more involved, it becomes apparent the scheme has more to do with Eileen than CJ. Though the plot takes some predictable turns as Owen's obsession darkens and the James Cain–style ending is telegraphed from the opening pages, the pathos, delusion and hope festering within Owen will carry readers through.

She has held visiting professorships at The London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Carnegie-Mellon University , and Rockefeller University , among others. Jan pioneered the magazine format on television as co-host of Evening Magazine, a nightly program in San Francisco from 1976-90. Currently, Jan is the host of Everyday Angels on Comcast Cable TV and the Executive Producer of Pacific Fusion TV. Her latest documentary, Resettlement to Redress, examines the resettlement of Japanese Americans after WWII and the apology from the US government regarding internment. Married and mother of six, Jan has won multiple awards and the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award. She holds seats on several boards including the Kristi Yamaguchi Always Dream Foundation and The Bank of Marin.
