SPOTLIGHT WO BOKURA NI

Summary

Summary

Young Fu stood on the narrow curbing before Dai's two-storied tenement in Chair-Makers' Way, Chungking , and stared about him. In the doorway, Fu Be Be, his mother, directed load-coolies in placing the household goods which she had brought from home, and anxiously examined each article as it passed before her. A day of clattering over country roads, followed by two on the crowded freight boat, had been difficult indeed for her, but the furniture looked no worse for wear than did her son. For him the hours had flowed into the past as swiftly as the current of the river. He had been fascinated by shifting scenes and strange faces; the constant menace of bandits with which all travel was shadowed, had added its own flavor to the experience, and when at last Chungking 's great walls had loomed above them, it had seemed the fulfillment of all his dreams.

Tales from the Expat Harem: Foreign Women in Modern Turkey

Anastasia M. Ashman and Jennifer Eaton Goekmen

Summary

This illuminating anthology provides a window into the country from the perspective of twenty-nine women who lived in Turkey over the past forty years. Poignant, humorous, and transcendent, the essays take readers to weddings and workplaces, down cobbled Byzantine streets, into boisterous bazaars along the Silk Road , and deep into the feminine stronghold of steamy Ottoman bathhouses. The outcome is a stunning collection of voices from women suspended between two homes as they redefine their identities and reshape their worldviews.

The Expat Harem women are on the brink of reclassifying themselves, challenged to redefine their lives, to rethink their definitions of spirituality, femininity, sensuality and self. Aligned in their ever-shifting contexts, both Turkey and the expatriate share a bond of constant metamorphosis. These are among the Tales from the Expat Harem . The titillating, anachronistic title acknowledges erroneous yet prevalent Western stereotypes about Asia Minor and the entire Muslim world, while also declaring that our storytellers share a common bond with the denizens of a traditional Turkish harem. Much like the imported brides of the Seraglio, Istanbul's 15th century palatial seat of the Ottoman sultanate, our writers are inextricably wedded to Turkish culture, embedded in it even, yet forever alien.

Shrink Yourself: Break Free from Emotional Eating Forever

- by
Roger Gould

Summary

Emotional eating is by far the most common cause of weight gain. As you'll learn in Shrink Yourself , all the diets, exercise regimens, and surgical procedures in the world will not free you from this vicious cycle. Why? Because they don't address your reasons for overeating.

Shrink Yourself , a supportive, unique, and ground-breaking guide written by a world-renowned therapist who has helped thousands of people lose weight and keep it off, gets to the heart of the problem. Shrink Yourself gives you the equivalent of eight expensive sessions with the best weight-loss therapist in the world for the price of a single book.

Yo-yo dieting is an endless cycle. You diet and lose weight. Then you eat "comfort food" - that piece of cake, huge bowl of ice cream, or enormous bag of potato chips you devour to smother your feelings of fear, anxiety, stress, anger, boredom, loneliness, frustration, or so many other feelings. The comfort doesn't last long. Soon you feel guilty for breaking your diet, so you displace the guilt with another helping. Before long, you're unpacking your fat clothes again and berating yourself for your lack of willpower. Then, warily, you contemplate the next diet.

With Shrink Yourself , renowned psychiatrist and emotional eating expert Dr. Roger Gould offers the first step-by-step analysis of the connection between eating and emotion. Dr. Gould explains why the connection is so powerful and shows you how to break the emotional eating cycle, shed all your excess pounds, and keep them off for good. Based on Dr. Gould's unique method and his work involving more than twenty thousand people, this revolutionary eight-session program reveals that your uncontrollable hunger is connected to feelings of powerlessness in your life. You'll discover the five layers of powerlessness and you'll learn how to recognize and cope with each of them by:

•  Conquering the feeling phobia

•  Waking up from the food trance

•  Challenging your self-doubts

•  Defeating your defeatism

•  Creating real safety

•  Dealing positively with anger

•  And more

Food may be a relatively inexpensive "over-the-counter tranquilizer," but its side effects can be devastating. So before you rush to try the next fad diet or start binge eating after a stressful day, ask yourself, "Is this the way I want to live?" Then read Shrink Yourself and learn how to take control of your emotions to slim down permanently? without ever counting calories again. You can truly shrink yourself.

THE POCKET PSYCHO

- by John Clarke

Format:

Economic Facts and Fallacies

- by Thomas Sowell

Summary

In his new book, Economic Facts and Fallacies best-selling author Thomas Sowell provides a solid, clear penetrating exploration of shoddy thinking across a wide range of contemporary issues in economics. Some specific topics include the power of fallacies as they appear in urban, male–female, academic, racial, and income economic issues. As Sowell always does, he provides a corrective explanation of why a laissez-faire approach is the solution to any problems brought about by these fallacies.

About the Author
Thomas Sowell 是芝加哥經濟學派 (Chicago School of Economics) 的成員之一,寫過數本分析經濟的書,如 Applied Economics , Basic Economics , 和 A Conflict of Visions 一書。
