CLASSICS: BOOKS FOR LIFE

- by Jane Gleeson-White

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE ( 麥田捕手 ) 、 Toni Morrison 的 BELOVED ( 寵兒 ) 、 J.M. Coetzee 的 WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS( 等待野蠻人 ) 、到 Salman Rushdie 的 MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN( 午夜之子 ) 。

Summary

'What makes a classic? For me, it's a book I can't imagine having lived without; a truthful, wholly ima
gined world, in astonishing language, by a writer unafraid to probe those things that scare us and scar us and make us human .' [Charlotte Wood, author of The Submerged Cathedral, in CLASSICS: BOOKS FOR LIFE]

Mark Twain defined a literary classic as 'something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read'. But what was true in the nineteenth century doesn't hold today. In our uncertain modern times, not only do books considered classics still fill the shelves of many bookshops, but these books continue to exert a powerful influence on contemporary culture -- some in obvious ways, such as the film and television adaptations of of the works of Homer, Jane Austen, George Eliot, Charles Dickens and Henry James; other in less obvious ways, through their enduring impact on fellow writers, artists and musicians.

When Jane Gleeson-White wrote an article on classic books for Good Reading magazine, she was amazed at the response it elicited: students, teachers and reading groups were hungering for recommendations from 'the canon', the list of classic texts that until quite recently was compulsory reading in Australian schools. The result is this beautiful book on why the greatest works of literature matter, and what they can give us today. As well, the book contains many great contemporary authors' lists of their favourite classics -- from J.K. Rowling, who loves Jane Austen, to J.M. Coetzee, whose 'top ten' includes Cervantes and Samuel Beckett.

Animal Architects : Building and the Evolution of Intelligence

-by James L. Gould & Carol Grant Gould

Summary

Animal behavior has long been a battleground between the competing claims of nature and nurture, with the possible role of cognition in behavior as a recent addition to this debate. There is an untapped trove of behavioral data that can tell us a great deal about how the animals draw from these neural strategies: The structures animals build provide a superb window on the workings of the animal mind.

Animal Architects examines animal architecture across a range of species, from those whose blueprints are largely innate (such as spiders and their webs) to those whose challenging structures seem to require intellectual insight, planning, and even aesthetics (such as bowerbirds' nests, or beavers' dams). Beginning with instinct and the simple homes of solitary insects, James and Carol Gould move on to conditioning; the “cognitive map” and how it evolved; and the role of planning and insight. Finally, they reflect on what animal building tells us about the nature of human intelligence-showing why humans, unlike many animals, need to build castles in the air.

The Boston Globe
For millennia, humans have debated the degree of sentience in animals. The prospect of using the structures an animal builds to extrapolate its cognitive capability is irresistible.  Fortunately for readers, the levelheaded Goulds prove wonderful guides through these shadowy corridors, at once skeptical and reverent.”

My Father Before Me: How Fathers and Sons Influence Each Other Throughout Their Lives

- by Michael J. Diamond

Summary

For decades, mothers were thought to be the only real influence on a child. Now we recognize that the father's involvement also has a profound impact, but how sons affect their fathers is too-often overlooked. In My Father Before Me psychoanalyst Michael J. Diamond firmly establishes fatherhood as an essential event for both the son's and the father's development. With chapters analyzing the father/son relationship throughout the life cycle, and demonstrating the powerful influence between them, Diamond calls for a more inclusive notion of masculinity, thus allowing men to access parts of themselves they previously ignored. He argues that sons are largely responsible for helping their fathers embrace this more flexible notion of manhood, making them better partners and better parents. Diamond has written an important book that enables us to make sense of the question: what does it truly mean to be a man.
