Summary
When Amelia goes on a three-day field trip with her class, the possibilities for embarrassment loom large in her mind. Dressing in front of others and wearing the wrong kind of pajamas and slippers (The combination you pick says a lot about who you are!) are just some of her concerns; never mind the presence of her older sister who is participating as a teaching aide (I almost choked on my macaroni! Cleo working with my class? That's my worst nightmare!). The format¡Vhand-written journal entries on lined paper under topics such as Amelia's Embarrassing Moments Hall of Fame and The Pajama Game¡Vallow the girl's perceptive voice to be heard, and since this is her story, she is the only developed character. Childlike cartoon drawings and many comedic captions extend the humor. Fortunately, Cleo encourages some group sharing of embarrassing moments and the ensuing revelations enable Amelia to realize that not only can she survive her humiliations, but that she also doesn't need to take responsibility for her sister's behavior. A multiethnic cast of characters helps promote the realization that all children suffer from similar concerns and doubts. Another winner in an already popular series.

About the Illustrator
Marissa Moss has been writing stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. After graduating from the University of California , Berkeley in 1979 and studying art history in graduate school for two years, Moss attended the California College of Arts and Crafts to learn how to break into publishing. She submitted stories and drawings to editors for five years, accumulating a shoebox of rejection letters before securing her first illustration contract with a major publisher. Moss published several other books before her most famous character, Amelia, came to her. ¡§I got the idea for Amelia's Notebook when I was buying school supplies for my son. I saw a black and white splotched composition book that reminded me of a notebook I kept when I was nine. I took it home and wrote and drew what I remembered mattered to me then. Amelia was what came out. ¡¨Moss mines ideas from her own childhood or things she happens to notice. ¡§Ideas come up all the time and I keep a notebook with me so I can write them down and capture them.¡¨ Moss's notebook has words and pictures, like Amelia's, but it's smaller for convenience.

Summary
Josie Tyrell, art model, teen runaway, and denizen of LA's 1980 punk rock scene, finds a chance at real love with art student Michael Faraday. A Harvard dropout and son of a renowned pianist, Michael introduces her to his spiritual quest and a world of sophistication she had never dreamed existed. But when she receives a call from the Los Angeles County Coroner, asking her to identify her lover's dead body, her bright dreams all turn to black.
"What happens to a dream when the dreamer is gone?" is the central question of PAINT IT BLACK, the story of the aftermath of Michael's death, and Josie's struggle to hold onto the true world he shared with her. As Josie searches for the key to understanding his death, she finds herself both repelled and attracted to Michael's pianist mother, Meredith, who holds Josie responsible for her son's torment. Soon, the two women find themselves drawn into a twisted relationship reflecting equal parts distrust and blind need.
Passionate, wounded, fiercely alive, Josie Tyrell walks the brink of her own destruction as she fights to discover the meaning of Michael's death.
§@ªÌ About the Illustrator
Janet Fitch was born in Los Angeles , a third-generation native, and grew up in a family of voracious readers. As an undergraduate at Reed College , Fitch had decided to become an historian, attracted to its powerful narratives, the scope of events, the colossal personalities, and the potency and breadth of its themes. But when she won a student exchange to Keele University in England , where her passion for Russian history led her, she awoke in the middle of the night on her twenty-first birthday with the revelation she wanted to write fiction. "I wanted to Live, not spend my life in a library. Of course, my conception of being a writer was to wear a cape and have Adventures." http://literati.net/Fitch/

The Buffalo News gives PAINT IT BLACK a rave, calling it "riveting. . . . In some ways, PAINT IT BLACK is a young lover's version of Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking -- with the sudden loss, although fictional in PAINT IT BLACK , just as searing."
The Cleveland Plain Dealer gives PAINT IT BLACK by Janet Fitch a great review: "Fitch writes with verve; there is nothing less than a stellar sentence in this novel. Her emotional honesty recalls the work of Joyce Carol Oates, her strychnine sentences the prose of Paula Fox."
PAINT IT BLACK by Janet Fitch is given a great review in the Baltimore City Paper . "Fitch's baroque sense of detail is amazing . . . the entire book is suffused with a sense of gilded decay of body and soul, and it's wonderfully done . . ."
An excellent lead review in the Los Angeles Times kicked off pub week for PAINT IT BLACK by Janet Fitch . "Absorbing. . . . Fitch has a gift for lush prose and rich, evocative descriptions, particularly of Los Angeles . . . . Janet Fitch has created a dark, crooked beauty that fulfills all the promise of WHITE OLEANDER and confirms that she too is an artist of the very highest order."
The Boston Globe describes PAINT IT BLACK as "Surprisingly compelling, suspenseful, and occasionally powerful."
"A knockout," raves the Rocky Mountain News in a review of PAINT IT BLACK . "Fitch resurrects the city [ Los Angeles ] in all its subterranean, gritty glory. . . . The dynamic between the women is fascinating. . . . Fitch narrates the novel in rich, raw language. . . . PAINT IT BLACK is a mesmerizing novel. . . . The emotional landscape she creates is just as rich, peopled by characters that buzz off the page, crackling with despair and determination."
In a four star review, People calls PAINT IT BLACK by Janet Fitch "a rewarding story of power and grace."
The Washington Post "Media Mix" gives PAINT IT BLACK a B+. "The author's early 1980s Los Angeles --land of punk rock and privilege--is made all the more absorbing by her incisive metaphors and naked emotion."

Summary
During a single summer in the 1970s, five 12-year-old girls learn that danger lies not in the external world of their night runs, where parents and their own fertile imaginations conjure visions of anonymous murderers, rapists, and other mysterious figures lurking in the nearby woods. They discover it instead in places they never would have thought to look: in their neighborhood and homes; in uncomprehending parents who steal their time and freedom (and, in one bizarre case, a thumb); in the pull of an uncertain world beyond their all-important friendships; and in their own burgeoning sexuality. Karen Lee Boren's vivid novel, the premier book in the Tin House New Voice series, begins in the collective first-person point of view, but gradually this reassuring group identity splinters as the girls mature and violence close to home threatens to split them apart for good .

The latest novel by the prolific Steel follows the fortunes of the young, wealthy, and beautiful Princess Christianna, the cosseted daughter of the prince of a small European nation. Returning to the kingdom after four years spent studying in America (followed everywhere by bodyguards), the princess chafes in her gilded cage and rails against the responsibilities and insignificance of her duty-bound royal life. Determined to make a difference in the world, she successfully petitions her father to be allowed to volunteer for the Red Cross and soon finds herself in East Africa working alongside doctors and other volunteers providing relief services to AIDS victims. Inevitably, in Africa she meets and falls in love with a handsome Harvard-educated doctor and is quite happy for the first time in her life, doing hard but meaningful work and spending time with her soul mate. When violence intrudes upon this idyll, Christianna must return home, where her father promptly quashes the relationship with the commoner. As the two lovers pine for each other from opposite ends of the earth, a series of events is unleashed leaving the princess in charge of her own destiny and ultimately reuniting the pair. Steel ' s fans will be waiting for this one.

Summary
Using extensive interviews with people from ages twenty-five to seventy, Isay shows that we're far from alone in our struggles to make this new, adult relationship work. She offers up groundbreaking insights and deeply moving stories that will inspire those in even the toughest situations. You'll learn why silence really is golden, and how sometimes the smallest gesture of love and acceptance is all that's needed to keep the lines of communication open. Isay's warmth and wit shine through on every page as she charts an invaluable course through the confusing and often painful interactions parents and children can face
.
From marriage and remarriage to stepparents and grandparents, virtually every type of family issue is addressed in anecdotes that are both compelling and reassuring. Preserving intimacy within a family isn't easy, but learning to maintain close ties with your children can be a truly rewarding and life-changing experience.
As the world around us grows colder and more disconnected, we need the comfort of family now more than ever. WALKING ON EGGSHELLS is the much-needed road map that will keep you connected to the people you love most.
