After attending college at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach , Florida , John returned to Chicago to pursue a career as a commercial pilot.
When a previously undiagnosed heart condition put an abrupt end to his aviation career, John returned to school as an evening student at Northwestern University 's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, where he earned his MBA. After spending five years as a strategy consultant helping companies identify ways to be more successful, he and his wife decided to leave the corporate world and travel.
Over the course of nine months, using a combination of boat, horse, plane, bicycle, train, car, elephant, scooter, walking, camel, and bus, they traveled over 70,000 miles (almost three times the circumference of the earth) as they backpacked around the world.

This is what he tackles in Play Money : People are selling things on the Internet that do not exist.  And this is perfectly legal (for now), though it has profound consequences for how we conceive of economics.  The goods in question: virtual trinkets awarded players in networked computer role-playing games.  Castles in the air, so to speak, are worth real money now.  And the virtual economy of a fantasy world is now connected to the real economy.

Dibbell looks at the world of MMORPGs--massively multiplayer online role-playing games-exploring how they reflect the legal and philosophical underpinnings of real-world global economics and social and commercial interaction.  He first became interested in the model of virtual economics through an article by economist Edward Castronova that laid out the economy of a virtual world and defined the value of its currency, the size of its export market, and even its GDP. Dibbell draws us into this through his own entry into the world of online gamers-for-profit, setting himself a goal of producing a reasonable annual income through gaming and the sale of virtual loot. Through that narrative he examines some of the larger questions that these MMORPGs engender: the macro-economic complications that result from these virtual micro-economies, and the rapidly changing texture of community life-or lack thereof-in this modern world.  This is truly a masterful joining of his personal experiences with a fascinating overview of how the virtual and real worlds are bumping into each other.
