Summary
On
Gemma's 16th birthday, she argues with her mother and wants to leave
India, runs off when her mother refuses to send her to London to
school, has a dreadful vision and witnesses her mother's death.
Two months later, Gemma is enrolled in London's Spence School, still
troubled by visions, and unable to share her grief and guilt over
her loss. She gradually learns to control her vision and enter the
"realms" where magical powers can make anything happen
and where her mother waits to instruct her.
Gradually Gemma and her new friends learn about the Order, an ancient
group of women who maintained the realms and regulated their power,
and how two students unleashed an evil creature from the realms
by killing a Gypsy girl. Gemma uncovers her mother's connection
to those events and learns what she now must do. The fantasy element
is obvious, and the boarding-school setting gives a glimpse into
a time when girls were taught gentility and the importance of appearances.

The prizewinning
writer Luis Alberto Urrea¡¦s long-awaited novel is an epic mystical
drama of a young woman¡¦s sudden sainthood in late 19th-century
Mexico. It is 1889, and civil war is brewing in Mexico. A 16-year-old
girl, Teresita, illegitimate but beloved daughter of the wealthy
and powerful rancher Don Tomas Urrea, wakes from the strangest dream--a
dream that she has died. Only it was not a dream. This passionate
and rebellious young woman has arisen from death with a power to
heal--but it will take all her faith to endure the trials that await
her and her family now that she has become the "Saint of Cabora."
THE HUMMINGBIRD¡¦S DAUGHTER is a vast, hugely satisfying novel of
love and loss, joy and pain. Two decades in the writing, this is
the masterpiece that Luis Alberto Urrea has been building up to.
Its publication will be a major literary event.
Summary
Teresita
is not an ordinary girl. Born of an illiterate, poor Indian mother,
she knows little about her past or her future. She has no idea that
her father is Don Tomas Urrea, the wild and rich owner of a vast
ranch in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. She has no idea that Huila,
the elderly healer who takes Teresita under her wing, knows secrets
about her destiny. And she has no idea that soon all of Mexico will
rise in revolution, crying out her name.
When
Teresita is but a teenager, learning from Huila the way plants can
cure the sick and prayer can move the earth, she discovers an even
greater gift: she has the power to heal. Her touch, like warm honey,
melts pain and suffering. But such a gift can be a burden, too.
Before long, the Urrea ranch is crowded with pilgrims and with agents
of a Mexican government wary of anything that might threaten its
power.

Summary
A
cutting-edge science book in the style of FERMAT'S LAST THEOREM
and CHAOS from an exciting and accessible new voice in popular science
writing. Bio-inspiration is the new engineering. Instead of - in
its crudest terms - welding large piece of hard 'dry' right-angled
metal together scientists, architects and engineers are looking
at imitating (or mimicking) nature by manufacturing 'wet' materials
such as spider silk or the surface of the gecko's foot. The amazing
power of the gecko's foot has long been known - it can climb a vertical
glass wall and even walk upside down on the ceiling - but nothing
could be done with it because its mechanism was beyond the power
of optical microscopes. Recently though the secret of the gecko's
foot has been solved by a team of scientists in Portland, Oregon
who have established that the mechanism really is dry, and that
is does not involve suction, capillary action or anything else the
lay person might imagine. Each foot has iGBP million bristles and
each bristle ramifies into hundreds of finer spatula-shaped projections.
The fine scale of the gecko's foot is beyond the capacity of conventional
microengineering but a team of nanotechnologists have already made
a good initial approximation. The gecko's foot is just one of many
examples of this new 'smart' science. In Peter Forbes' accessible
and engaging book we also discover, amongst other things, how George
de Mestral's brush with the spiny fruits of the cocklebur inspired
him to invent Velcro; how the shape of leaves opening from a bud
has inspired the design of solar-powered satellites; how scientists
are trying to mimic the self-cleaning leaves of the Scared Lotus
plant to create the first self-cleaning pane of glass; and the parallels
between cantilever bridges and the spines of large mammals such
as the bison. The new 'smart' science of Bio-inspiration is going
to produce a plethora of products over the next decades that will
transform our lives, and force us to look at the world in a completely
new way. It is science we will be reading about in our papers very
soon; it is the science of tomorrow's world.?
§@ªÌ
About the Author
Peter
Forbes has written a series of articles on Biomimetics for The Guardian
and a chapter on the same subject for The Guardian¡¦s book, Frontiers
03. He translated Primo Levi¡¦s personal anthology, The Search for
the Roots (Penguin Press) in 2001 and Bloodaxe published his latest
poetry anthology We Have Come Through in 2003.

Summary
Acclaimed
author and journalist Charles R. Morris vividly brings these four
men to life. On one side are Carnegie, the ruthless competitor;
Gould, the provocateur in the shadows; and Rockefeller, the visionary
who understood how to manage sprawling empires. These three were
obsessed with progress, experiment, and speed. In steel, railroads,
oil, and money markets, they rallied behind a single-minded code:
bigger, cheaper, faster. And then there was Morgan, the gentleman
businessman, who fought, instead, for a global trust in American
business. Through their competition over the last decades of the
nineteenth century, they built a powerful nation populated with
consumers as well as producers, fostering the growth of the middle
class. The Tycoons tells the incredible story of how four determined
men wrenched the economy into the modern age, inventing a nation
of full economic participation that could not have been imagined
only a few decades earlier.

Summary
The
recent cooling of Internet and "new-economy" fever does
not mean that the net will not be a factor in business. Most of
us like the net's ease of access to product information and ordering
possibilities, while smart companies find that relying on the net
can lower their customer acquisition, order, and resupply costs,
help them track customer credit and purchase history, and make it
easier to target advertising. Spector (Nordstrom Way) shows how
successful bricks-and-mortar firms incorporate the features of the
web into their strategies for better service and more sales. Sample
companies include Nordstrom, Frederick's of Hollywood, Powell's
Books (in Oregon), Fedex, REI, Well's Fargo Bank, and the San Francisco
Giants baseball club. As Spector shows, the key for success is seamless
coordination between in-store and FAX, e-mail, phone, and web features.
Spector does a thorough job of covering the ramifications of Internet
and business service, and busy managers will like the succinct summaries
at the end of each chapter.
