Summary
Since
the days of the Persian Empire, caviar has trumpeted status, wealth,
prestige, and sex appeal. Today it goes up to one hundred dollars
an ounce, and aficionados will go to extraordinary lengths to get
their fill of it. According to Carey, that¡¦s just the problem.
In this spectacular jaunt, Carey immerses himself in the world of
sturgeon, the fish that lays these golden eggs. What he finds disturbing:
Sturgeon populations worldwide have declined 70 percent in the last
twenty years, most dramatically in the Caspian Sea. The beluga sturgeon,
producer of the most coveted caviar, has climbed to number four
on the World Wildlife Fund¡¦s most-endangered species list.
Armed
with a novelist¡¦s eye for human eccentricity and an investigator¡¦s
nose for trouble, Carey takes us on an illuminating journey across
the globe to uncover the secrets of the sturgeon. On that trek we
meet the fascinating real-life characters both profiting from its
scarcity and fighting to save it. A high-stakes cocktail of business,
diplomacy, technology, and espionage, THE PHILOSOPHER FISH is, at
its heart, the epic story of a 250-million-year-old fish struggling
to survive.

Summary
O¡¦Connor,
a vivacious, free-spirited young journalist known for her penetrating
celebrity interviews, is bent on unearthing secrets long ago buried
by the handsome showbiz team of singer Vince Collins and comic Lanny
Morris. These two highly desirable men, once inseparable (and insatiable,
where women were concerned), were driven apart by a bizarre and
unexplained death in which one of them may have played the part
of murderer. As the tart-tongued, eye-catching O¡¦Connor ventures
deeper into this unsolved mystery, she finds herself compromisingly
coiled around both men, knowing more about them than they realize
and less than she might like, but increasingly fearful that she
now knows far too much.

Summary
Drawing from a dacade's worth of empirical data, Kasser examines
what happens when we organize our lives around materialistic pursuits.
He look s at the effects on our internal experience and interpersonal
relationships, as well as on our communities and the world at large.
He shows what materialistic values actually undermind our well-being,
as they maintain feelings of insecurity, weaken interpersonal ties,
and make us feel less free. Kasser not only defines the problem,
but proposes ways we can change ourselves, our families, and our
society to become less materialistic.

Summary
From flying
hot-blooded squirrels and diminutive kinglets to sleeping black
bears and torpid turtles to frozen insects and frogs, the animal
kingdom relies on staggering evolutionary innovations to survive
winter. Unlike their human counterparts, who alter the environment
to accommodate physical limitations, most animals are adapted to
an amazing range of conditions. In Winter World: The Ingenuity of
Animal Survival, biologist, illustrator, and award-winning author
Bernd Heinrich explores his local woods, where he delights in the
seemingly infinite feats of animal inventiveness he discovers there.
Because winter drastically affects the most elemental
component of all life -- water -- radical changes in a creature's
physiology and behavior must take place to match the demands of
the environment. Some creatures survive by developing antifreeze;
others must remain in constant motion to maintain their high body
temperatures. Even if animals can avoid freezing to death, they
must still manage to find food in a time of scarcity, or store it
from a time of plenty.
Beautifully
illustrated throughout with the author's delicate drawings and infused
by his inexhaustible enchantment with nature, Winter World: The
Ingenuity of Animal Survival awakens the wonders and mysteries by
which nature sustains herself through winter's harsh, cruel exigencies.
