THE
NEWS FROM PARAGUAY
-
by Lily Tuck
A historical
epic that tells an unusual love story, this novel offers a kaleidoscopic
portrait of nineteenth-century Paraguay.
(Lily
Ella
Summary
THE
NEWS FROM PARAGUAY, a compelling historical novel set in mid-19th
century Paraguay which follows the life and times of dictator Francisco
Solano L?pez (”Franco”) and the infamous courtesan who was his
companion from 1855-1870. Filled with sly humor and grisly war scenes,
it is an unflinching portrayal of love and cruelty, imbued with
a richness of character and period detail that calls to mind the
work of Joseph Conrad, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Barbara Kingsolver.
1854
Paris: it begins with a bright blue parrot feather that falls out
of Ella Lynch’s hat during her afternoon ride in the Bois de Boulogne,
and captures the attention of the 27-year-old future dictator of
Paraguay. A raunchy courtship commences -- featuring a poncho, a
Paraguayan band, and a horse named Mathilde -- and concludes with
the fair-haired, Irishborn Ella sailing to a new life on the South
American continent with Franco and his vast fortune, pregnant with
his first son and heir Pancho. The novel progresses via a series
of entries in Ella's diary -- letters to her friend back in Paris
(the Princess Mathilde Bonaparte) which serve to underline the obscurity
of Paraguay in world affairs at the time -- and short vignettes
that follow the fortunes of a panoply of colorful characters surrounding
the couple, including Ella's French maid, a Scottish engineer, an
English doctor, a superstitious Spanish tutor, an American ambassador,
a Guarani Indian wet nurse, Ella and Franco's children, and a host
of Paraguayan locals.
Their
love story and mutual rise to power and riches is set against the
backdrop of a South American country subject to the diminutive Franco’s
outsized and ill-fated imperial ambitions. Meanwhile, Ella -- loathed
by the Spanish aristocracy in Asunci?n, snubbed by Franco's family
and the wives of foreign diplomats -- opportunistically plunders
the country's wealth and holds sway over Paraguayan society from
her beautiful pink palace modeled on the Palais Garnier, in which
she bears him six children and becomes influential in matters of
state and politics. Increasingly unstable and paranoid, Franco decides
war is the only way to establish respect for Paraguay as a major
power. Following in the footsteps of his hero Napoleon, Franco imports
European personnel, transportation, and ammunition into Paraguay
to confront a coalition that included all the other South American
states, and their allies (USA, France and Great Britain). He launches
an attack on Brazil, antagonizes Argentina, and alienates his erstwhile
ally along the Rio de la Plata, the Banda Orientale (the future
Uruguay).
A
terrible and hopeless struggle against the Triple Alliance ensues
-- and Paraguay, a charming land of oranges, yerba mate, brightly
colored parrots, and cigar-smoking Guarani Indian lacemakers, will
never be the same.
THE
NEWS FROM PARAGUAY is based on actual historical events. The War
of the Triple Alliance (1865-1870) was waged by megalomaniac L?pez
in an attempt to increase Paraguay's prestige. Instead, it left
the country in ruins -- with more than half of the population dead,
the economy destroyed, and Franco killed during the retreat. His
beautiful and refined mistress Ella Lynch (Eliza Lynch), believed
to have pushed Franco towards war as his best bid for immortality,
was widely despised by locals and expelled from the country after
his death. Yet ironically, her memory has been mythologized to Evita-like
proportions, and nearly 100 years later her body was exhumed in
Paris and brought to Paraguay where she was proclaimed a national
heroine.
The
urgency of Tuck's narrative, the clarity and vividness of its detail,
and the wealth of characters, whose stories are skillfully layered
and developed, give this novel both an epic scope and an intimate
feel.

the Blue : A Father's Flight and a Daughter's Return
- by Susan Edsall
Summary
From
the Inside Flap
Three years ago, Susan Edsall's father, a rebuilder and pilot of
antique airplanes, suffered a devastating stroke that left him unable
to read, write, speak, tell time, understand the alphabet--or fly.
The doctors told Susan the best her family could hope for was that
he would learn to play checkers. Susan knew if her dad couldn't
fly, he'd just as soon not breathe, so she chose another path. Battling
the pessimistic conclusion of the experts--and her own looming fears--she
and her sister, Sharon, aka the Blister Sisters, decided to take
matters into their own hands. With no medical training but double
doses of determination, they bushwhacked their own rehab program
and got their father back behind the controls of his beloved open-cockpit
biplane and into the air.
作者
About the Author

Edsall took her first airplane flight with her dad when she was

The
Power of Productivity : Wealth, Poverty, and the Threat to Global
Stability
生產力
-
by William W. Lewis
Summary
William
W. Lewis—founding director of the McKinsey Global Institute and
former partner at McKinsey & Company—here offers a sweeping,
practical look at why some countries are rich, why others are poor,
and what we can do about it.
The
Power of Productivity is based on years of research on the economies
of thirteen nations—an analysis that asked fundamental questions
about what products are purchased by consumers, how (or if) people
and corporations pay taxes, even how large or small a country’s
retail stores are. From Russia and India to Brazil and the United
States, the McKinsey Global Institute studied national economies
from the ground up, and here Lewis brings together the results and
formulates them into a broad and applicable set of solutions for
ameliorating economic disparity, which at base holds that the key
to improving economic conditions is increasing productivity through
intense, fair competition and the protection of consumer rights
作者
About the Author
William
W. Lewis was a partner at McKinsey and Company for twenty years
and the Founding Director of the McKinsey Global Institute. He held
several policy-making positions in the U.S. Departments of Defense
and Energy and also served in the World Bank for four years earlier
in his career. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal,
the New York Times, and the Economist.

Animals
in Translation : Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal
Behavior
-
by Temple Grandin, Catherine Johnson
Summary
Temple
Grandin's Animals in Translation speaks in the clear voice of a
woman who emerged from the other side of autism, bringing with her
an extraordinary message about how animals think and feel.
Temple's
professional training as an animal scientist and her history as
a person with autism have given her a perspective like that of no
other expert in the field. Standing at the intersection of autism
and animals, she offers unparalleled observations and groundbreaking
ideas about both.
Autistic
people can often think the way animals think -- in fact, Grandin
and co-author Catherine Johnson see autism as a kind of way station
on the road from animals to humans -- putting autistic people in
the perfect position to translate "animal talk." Temple
is a faithful guide into their world, exploring animal pain, fear,
aggression, love, friendship, communication, learning, and, yes,
even animal genius. Not only are animals much smarter than anyone
ever imagined, in some cases animals are out-and-out brilliant.
